چکیده

Using a combination of deep MID-IR observations obtained by IRAC, MIPS and IRS on board Spitzer we investigate the MID-IR properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z∼3, establish a better understanding of their nature and attempt a complete characterisation of the population. With deep mid-infrared and optical observations of ∼1000 LBGs covered by IRAC/MIPS and from the ground respectively, we extend the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the LBGs to mid-infrared. Spitzer data reveal for the first time that the mid-infrared properties of the population are inhomogeneous ranging from those with marginal IRAC detections to those with bright rest-frame near-infrared colors and those detected at 24μm MIPS band revealing the newly discovered population of the Infrared Luminous Lyman Break Galaxies (ILLBGs). To investigate this diversity, we examine the photometric properties of the population and we use stellar population synthesis models to probe the stellar content of these galaxies. We find that a fraction of LBGs have very red colors and large estimated stellar masses M∗>5×10 10M⊙. We discuss the link between these LBGs and submm-luminous galaxies and we report the detection of rest frame 6.2 and 7.7 μm emission features arising from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) in the Spitzer/IRS spectrum of an infrared-luminous Lyman break galaxy at z=3.01.

Rest-frame Mid-infrared Detection of an Extremely Luminous Lyman Break Galaxy with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (irs)

We present the first rest-frame 4 m detection of a Lyman break galaxy. The data were obtained using the 16 m imaging capability of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The target object, J134026.44+634433.2, is an extremely luminous Lyman break galaxy at z 1⁄4 2:79, first identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra (as reported by Bentz et al.). The source is strongly detected with a fl...

We use deep GALEX images in UV to define the first large sample of 420 Lyman Break Galaxies at z ∼ 1. Deep Spitzer IRAC and MIPS provide the first detection of a large sample of Lyman Break Galaxies in the mid-to far-infrared range. We are therefore able to study and compare the UV and TIR emission of Lyman Break Galaxies. We find that about 15 % of the LBG sample are strong emitters at 24µm (R...

Spitzer Observations of Z∼3 Lyman Break Galaxies: Stellar Masses and Mid-infrared Properties

We describe the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z∼3 using deep mid-infrared and optical observations of the Extended Groth Strip, obtained with IRAC and MIPS on board Spitzer and from the ground, respectively. We focus on LBGs with detections at all four IRAC bands, in particular the 26 galaxies with IRAC 8 μm band (rest–frame K-band) detections. We use st...

ACCEPTED TO APJL Preprint typeset using LATEX style emulateapj v. 10/09/06 A LYMAN BREAK GALAXY CANDIDATE AT z ∼ 9 1

We report the discovery of a z ∼ 9 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidate, selected from the NICMOS Parallel Imaging Survey as a J-dropout with J110 H160 = 1.7. Spitzer/IRAC photometry reveals that the galaxy has a blue H160 3.6 μm color, and a spectral break between 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We interpret this break as the Balmer break, and derive a best-fit photometric redshift of z ∼ 9. We use Monte Carlo ...

Massive Lyman Break Galaxies at Z ∼ 3 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey

We investigate the properties of 1088 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 3 selected from a ∼ 2.63 deg2 sub-region of the First Look Survey field using the ground-based multi-color data and the Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data at 3–8 and 24 μm. With the wide area and the broad wavelength coverage, we sample a large number of “rare” u-band dropouts which are massive (M∗ > 10M⊙), allowing...
